A note from Shirley

In 1983, I had a car accident, which started my healing journey. The accident was very painful both emotionally and physically, but came also with many gifts! In my rehab program, I started physical and emotional therapy.

I made a choice to begin university and obtain a Certificate of Social Work & become a Registered Social Worker. My training enabled me to work with Personal Counselling Services from 1988-1998. I continued my education and obtained a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1991. In 1998 my professional partner and I formed Acacia Counselling Services, which we closed in 2016. I then started my own business called Shirley Smith Counselling and Therapy.

I have had many losses in my life: my dad died before I was born, my son died in a car accident at age 20, I lost a number of dear friends and recently my mother has also passed.

I have taken years of workshops, residentials and classes that required me to do my own personal therapy. Through these courses I have been able to grieve my losses and heal. I see healing as an ongoing journey. I continue to take ongoing education that I believe will benefit my clients by making me a better therapist.

I believe that I have to do my own personal work and have a relationship with myself before I can guide my clients. When we do our personal work everybody benefits: ourselves, our families, our children, our grandchildren, and our friends.
